Make merit with money vs. Make merit without money
And
Make merit with the winning bet

Questions from the audience:

What is the difference between “making merit by donation and then make a wish” and “making merit by volunteering without donation and then make a wish”?

Suppose, a woman’s husband had bet the snooker games or World Cup matches and won, and then he brought the winning bet to his wife to spend although she does not want him to bet at all.  She often warns him but he does not listen to her.  Will she have any sin with her husband if she spends this money?  If she makes merit with this money, what will she get in the future?  She does not want to get this sin attached her. How should she deal this problem?

Answers:
The doer receives merits from “donation and make a wish” and “volunteering without donation and make a wish” but they are something different.  If the doer makes merit with money, it will cause him to have money or to be rich.  If the doer makes merit without money or by volunteering, he will be healthy and there are some people helping him.  If the doer makes merit by teaching, he will be intelligent.  If the doer makes merit by giving Dhamma Dana, he will be rich of Dhamma Dana as well.  You can see that there are many kinds of merit’s fruits.

About the merit yielding fruit to you, it is up to your wishes you made before because merit is the fulfill element like the electricity.  If you plug in the fan, the fan winds; if you plug in the iron, the iron is hot; if you plug in the refrigerator, the refrigerator is cool.  In addition, making merit by donation will cause the doer get money or rich directly and making merit by volunteering will cause the doer to be healthy, strong and powerful like Maha Upāsikā Visākhā.

About the husband who had bet and won, and gave his wife the winning bet to spend in the household, his wife will have the indirect sins such as she has the blueprint of having the gambler husband in the next lifetimes.  If she makes merit with this money, she will get the decreasing fruits because of the impure alms.  When the merit yields fruit, some of her properties will be lost because of gambling.

What the wife has to do is to be her husband’s Kalayanamitra or best friend.  She has to explain about the wickedness of gambling.  She also has to suggest him to earn money and salary in the right way or morally.  Even if they make merit with the pure money which is less than the impure money, the merit from the first one will yield fruits more than the last one because of the purity of alms.  When the merit yields fruits, the donator will get the property without losing in gambling or something bad at all.
