Ordination…Why is it good? What will you get? And why should you do?
The ordination season is coming soon because from now till the Rains Retreat Day in July, all Thai Buddhist men who were born in 1991 or before can apply to be ordained as real monks. Even if you were ordained and disrobed, you can apply to do it again because the re-ordination has been allowed.
The Buddhists have known that if you were born as a man, you should be ordained as a real monk at least once in your life. However, the teenagers in this generation may not know how good it is, why they should do and what they will get from the ordination. Some guys might think only that the ordination was a tradition or something they should do for their parents so that they did it as the man’s duties. For this case, if you determine positively, the ordination may purify your mind and you will get a chance to study the Lord Buddha’s teachings. In fact, an objective of the ordination is to repay the parents’ kindness. For the ordinand’s parents, the ordination is the way to lead their son to enter into the monkhood, to study and keep the monastic disciplines and being the monk who keep the Buddhism further.

The ordination also has the special fruit which is better than other merits such as the Picked-up robe set offering, the Kathina robe set offering, or the Vihara building. The parents have to rejoice in these kinds of merit before and then they will get the merit. But for the ordination, whenever their son has been ordained as a monk, they will get the completely merit at once even if they passed away or they don’t know about their son’s ordination. The Lord Buddha had taught that when a man had been ordained as a monk, kept the monastic disciplines well and passed away, he would be reborn as a celestial being or Brahma for 60 Kappas, his parents would get this great merit for 30 Kappas and the ordination hosts would get this merit for 12 Kappas as well.
The ordination is like the monk’s standing that his one leg is standing on the way to heaven and another leg is standing on the way to hell. If he can keep the 227 precepts well, he will go to heaven. If he can’t, he will be reborn among the human world and hells. If you were born as a real man, you should be ordained at least once in this life except you are not Buddhist.
