Dr. Pornchai Pinyapong, the President of the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY), and Buddhist Networks gathered in front of the office of the United Nations in Thailand to object the destruction of the ancient Buddhist city “Mes Aynak” in Afghanistan on November 13th, 2012.

Dr. Pornchai said that WFBY, Single Mind Federation, and Worldwide Buddhist Networks, over 50 total organizations, came to send the Letter of Disagreement to object the destruction of the ancient Buddhist city “Mes Aynak” to the United Nations in Thailand and UNESCO on Sukhumvit 40 Road for saving it as a World Heritage because Afghanistan is going to destroy it for copper mining in December 2012.  Thai Buddhists agree that the Afghanistan government should delay or preserve these places because they are priceless for Buddhists and mankind including there are a lot of inestimable Buddhist things there.

Dr. Pornchai added that the ancient Buddhist place “Mes Aynak” is located about 40 kilometers far away from Kabul.  Its area is about 250 Rai.  The Afghanistan Government has made a contract with a Chinese company for a 30-year copper mining project which Afghanistan will get over 92,500 million Baht.  The copper mine is open and its area is about 6,000 Rai.  If this planning starts, they will destroy all ancient places. So he and the protesters wanted the Chinese company to delay this project for saving these heritages.

“We sent the Letter of Disagreement to the Environment Department of UN to co-operate the Chinese Government and Afghanistan to delay the drilling or skip this area because we want to keep it as the World Heritage for the new generations.  This place is the historic link between Afghanistan and Asia because it was the ancient stopover on the Silk Road.  It is also the link of the history of Gandhara State, the first place on the World that built Buddha Images,” the President of WFBY said.
