The Efficiency of the well-trained mind
avoid taking advantage of others, whether it be by killing, stealing, sexual misconduct or telling lies.
The stated qualities cause those who have well-trained minds
to have the courage to take responsibility for human dignity on various levels.
Although they have to exercise patience, they lead their lives with the
determination to avoid taking advantage of others, whether it be by killing,
stealing, sexual misconduct or telling lies.
">Those who have refined minds have all the opposite
characteristics to those who have untrained minds. They will tend to
broad-minded-but this means that they are generous and unselfish rather than
being someone to tolerate fools gladly. Whenever they do something, they think
of the benefits of their actions both to themselves and others. Some of them
are even more selfless, being more concerned about the public benefits than
they are about themselves.
characteristics to those who have untrained minds.
Those whose minds are well-trained will always be
motivated to sacrifice greatly for the benefit of their nations. They act for
both personal and public benefit.
Those who practice meditation habitually will easily
understand the true meaning of the word ‘broad-minded’ because when one’s mind
becomes still, one will literally feel light-hearted in a way that expands
without limits. And when the internal illumination occurs, one will know and
see the characteristics of mind that expands unlimitedly together with
peacefulness, compassion and wisdom. This is the efficiency of the trained mind
which is opposite to that of the untrained one.
">Those whose minds are well-trained will have the capability
of deliberating every problem in detail-and they will be able to solve problems
by getting to the root of things.
unselfish rather than being someone to tolerate fools gladly.
To give an example concerning the killing of small animals,
most people would shrink from killing any kind of animal regardless of the
size. In general, people would never go as far as killing one another.
Furthermore, they would never think of killing animals of any size (hunters and
fishermen excluded!). However, they usually think nothing of killing the
smaller animals such as ants, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. They kill these
animals because they think that these animals deserve it for annoying and
irritating them. This is the thought of the people with an untrained mind. The
qualities of the untrained mind make it difficult to penetrate to the root of
any problem. Even of they kill these animals by way of poisoning or pesticide,
it cannot truly help them to get rid of those animals, which are never
completely eradicated. This is a common example of the lack of thoroughness in
the thinking of the untrained mind.
This is the reason why we see the mind as key to the reformation of human nature and human behavior alike.

Those whose minds are well-trained will consider things more
deeply and realize that to get rid of mosquitos means they must get to the root
of the problem. They might work with others to minimize the standing water
where the mosquitos lay their eggs. This way, they can solve problem at the
root without losing their temper or their human dignity. They will realize that
infestation by ants, flies or cockroaches is due to careless disposal of food
scraps. All they need to do is help each other in properly disposing of the
scraps, so that the pests will take themselves elsewhere without them having to
resort to killing to make it happen.
It is thus vitally important that every nation has
sufficient people with well-trained minds to give that country a wholesome
vision. Without such people, lack of vision will make that country incapable of
making the wise decisions necessary to build a powerful nation.
This is the reason why we see the mind as key to the
reformation of human nature and human behavior alike.
