Sandbags to prevent flooding

To reduce the flood damage, the sandbags should be properly placed and aligned. The sandbags should be completely filled so that it can be best used to prevent flooding. The fill-in materials of the sandbags can be made of anything, but sand is the best and easiest material used to fill in the bags. Dust and clay are better at preventing flooding, but are difficult to be used in the bag-filling process. We can make sandbags of any size, but it would be preferable to use sandbags that are not over 15 kilograms in weight because the young and elderly will both be able to carry them.

Ways to align the sandbags to prevent flooding:

The sandbags should be aligned along the triangular pyramid shape. The base is three times wider than its height. Next, the clear plastic sheet is used to place over the triangular pyramid without making it too tight. Finally, the sandbags are used as weights to put on top of the plastic sheet’s edges from both sides to hold it down.

How to select the location sandbags to make a flood barrier:

We should choose a spot that will make use of the fewest amount of sandbags that are required to cover the distance (length) of the flood barrier. Moreover, we should choose the spot where the height of the flood barrier does not have to be too high to minimize the amount of sandbags used. The sandbags flood barrier should also not be placed close to the wall, but instead it should be placed about 2.5 meters away from the wall. If the height of the sandbags flood barrier is higher than one 1 meter, the soil should be cleared before building the base so that the flood barrier will be more stable.

How to stack the sandbags:

The sandbags should be placed so that they overlapped each other. The first sandbag should be placed along the length of the flood barrier. The second sandbag should be placed on top of the first sandbag’s opening. The base of the flood barrier should not be less than 3 times of its height. The 2nd row of the sandbags should be aligned so that it is parallel to the 1st row of the same floor (1st floor level). The 2nd floor level of sandbags should be placed over the joint between the 1st row and the 2nd row of the sandbags at the 1st floor level.

How to place sandbags to prevent flooding:

To build the flood barrier is to use sandbags in the correct method by bonding trench 1 sack deep and 2 sacks wide as shown in the picture. If possible, also strip sod before laying the bottom layer.

How to close the gap of the embankment:

1.    After you have finished placing the sandbags to build a flood barrier, you are able to close the gap with a plastic sheet to prevent water seeping.

2.    Next, you should fill the gap between the sandbags with soil or sand approximately 2.5 cm. in width and 30 cm. in height along the base of the flood barrier.

3.    Place the sheet of the polypropylene plastic so that it protrudes about 30 cm. from the top edge. The polypropylene plastic should be placed a little bit over the crest of the flood barrier. The thickness of the polypropylene plastic should be approximately 6 millimeters.

4.    Place the sheet of the plastic loosely because the water pressure will cause the plastic sheet to seal the sandbags flood barrier. If you placed the plastic sheet too tightly, the water pressure may cause the plastic sheet to leak.

5.    Place the sandbags over the protruding portion of the plastic sheet of the flooding barrier’s base to help prevent water seeping through the flooding barrier.

6.    Place the sandbags approximately every 2 meters over the edge of the crest of the flooding barrier. Place soil or wood to cover the plastic sheet to prevent the plastic from blowing away.

7.    Do not walk over the plastic sheet or use sharp objects near the plastic sheet.

NO! The sandbags should not be filled too full.
NO! The sandbags should not be tied too tightly nor too low.
YES! The sandbags should be filled about one-half full and tied near the top.
