“Where is Steve Jobs now?” presents knowledge about the Law of Kamma and the round of rebirth undergone by every living being in such a way as to make it easy to understand. Here, we learn about the reality of life so that we can gain an understanding about why we are born, where we will go after we die, what is our life’s objective, how must we conduct our life, etc. The information allows one to become fearful of unwholesome deeds and their destructive consequences, to be more mindful about performing wholesome deeds, and to see the importance of meditation practice in one’s daily life.

The third question: What previous deeds caused Mr. Steve Jobs to die from pancreatic cancer when he was just 56 years old ?
Answer: Before the students all over the world (especially the new students) listen to the answer. It is important for you to understand that every human being on earth regardless of his race or creed has all undergone countless rebirths. And every single act that we had performed in our previous lives, whether it be good or bad, intentional or unintentional, can have an effect on our life in the current existence.
Therefore, everything that happens in our life, whether it be happiness, unhappiness, wealth, poverty, fulfillment, disappointment, etc., does not occur as a result of a coincidence, an accident or the dictate of a particular being.
But everything that happens in our life results from our own actions. If we had performed mostly wholesome deeds in our previous lives, we will meet with happiness, fulfillment, and success in this life. However, if we had performed mostly unwholesome deeds in our previous lives, in our current existence, we are sure to meet with unhappiness, disappointment, and various problems.
Likewise, Mr. Steve Jobs’ success in this life was the result of the merit accumulated throughout many previous existences as well as the seven factors mentioned in the last class. But while he was enjoying his success, he had to fall ill and eventually die from pancreatic cancer when he was just 56 years old, less than the current life expectancy of 75 years. What caused this to happen?
Let us now learn about the previous deeds that caused Mr. Steve Jobs to fall ill and eventually die from pancreatic cancer when he was just 56 years old.
Mr. Steve Jobs’ illness and death were the fruits of misdeeds he had committed in one lifetime which was a number of lifetimes previous to this one. The details are as follows.
In one lifetime which was a number of lifetimes previous to this one, Mr. Steve Jobs was reborn a handsome gentleman in a middle-class family that operated a shop selling new and used goods.
In that existence, he was reborn on earth in an age of technological advancement not unlike our current environment. For example, it had modern public utility. It had automobiles, trains, planes, electric appliances, telephones, etc. This was also an age where Buddhism was approaching its final period where the original teachings of the Lord Buddha had been pretty much overlooked. And Buddhism had been split into a large number of different schools as a result of the differences in individual interpretation of the original teachings. Moreover, it was an age close to the “Migasanni Age”.
In the Migasanni Age, the average human lifespan will be ten years. Human beings during this age will have no moral values. They mistake bad for good and scoundrels will assume positions of power. People of the Migasanni Age have no respect for their parents or their teachers, and they are consumed by aggressiveness and vindictiveness. Etc.
And when the Migasanni Age is approaching, the social conditions will be much worse than they are now. There will be thieves and robbers everywhere. People will have no fear of misdeeds and their ill consequences. Rich people will exploit poor people shamelessly. Poor people will become poorer and poorer. Most people will have to scratch out a living. Lawlessness will be the norm. People will earn a living by means that go against the Law of Kamma and morality. Addictive drugs will be sold openly in the market whereas in our current environment, drugs are still illegal and cannot be sold openly. Cities and towns will be run down. Hardship will be experienced by one and all. War between countries will be frequent. People will suffer economic downturn and food will be scarce. Etc.
When the overall social conditions are poor, Buddhist monks who practice righteousness will have to seek shelter deep in the forest in order to practice meditation. The remaining monks will not practice according to the Dhamma-Vinaya as decreed by the Lord Buddha. They will cause Buddhism to split into a large number of different schools as a result of their own interpretation of the Lord Buddha’s Teachings.
Although Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence was born in an age where immorality was the norm, he was a very kind-hearted person who loved his family and believed in Buddhism. He was also very hard-working and very patient. Sometime later in that existence, Mr. Steve Jobs’ father who was the breadwinner of the family passed away. And the family had to encounter all kinds of hardship as a result.
His older brother had to assume the breadwinner role by carrying on the family business. Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence worked hard to help his brother in the business. But the business generated just enough of an income to support the family.
Sometime later, the older brother fell ill from a liver disease. Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence loved and respected his older brother like a father because his older brother had provided for him and taken care of him for years. He thought to himself that he could not allow his beloved brother to die and he was determined to find a way to cure his brother of the liver disease.
Due to his lack of experience in a society full of exploitative and aggressive people plus the fact that he did not have much money, Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence decided to consult an acquaintance that was an unlicensed doctor rather than a licensed doctor who charged a very high fee.
When Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence went to consult the unlicensed doctor, he took the opportunity to exploit Mr. Steve Jobs by selling him counterfeit medicine at a very high price in spite of the fact that they were acquaintances. The unlicensed doctor lied to him about the potency of the counterfeit drug so that he could command a very high price for it. Remember now how this was the age of immorality and exploitation.
At the time, Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence put his complete trust in the unlicensed doctor and all he could think of was how he wanted to find a cure for his brother’s illness. He did not take the time to find out more about the counterfeit medicine. On the contrary, he hurried to take what was left of the money earned from the family business and used it to pay for the counterfeit medicine.
But after Mr. Steve Jobs gave the counterfeit medicine to his older brother, instead of improving his condition, it worsened to the point where he almost died. When Mr. Steve Jobs in that existence saw what was happening to his brother, he began to rethink the whole situation as well as all the things that the unlicensed doctor had told him. Finally, he came to the realization that he had been shamelessly duped.
Having realized how he had been duped, how would he feel? The answer will be given in the next class.
